Shimeien Cottage and Shimeien Kaitaku (Pioneer) Memorial Park

The Shimeien cottage was built in 1883 (Meiji 16) in the Hashiguchi Farm area, and used by Hashiguchi Bunzo. Hashiguchi Bunzo was working in the nearby Mombetsu (now Date City) sugar fabric, as he discovered that Sobetsu is an ideal place for agriculture and fruit production. He had studied agriculture in America, and imported various agricultural instruments and tools, as well as agricultural methods and diverse apple and fruit trees to Japan, and started out a farm in 1887 (Meiji 20) both in Sobetsu as well as the nearby Rusutsu. The surrounding park is beautiful, lots of huge trees, green grass and shade, just perfect if you want to take a break and relax.
